Abstract

VILLAPLANA GARCIA, María1,2. Ending the temporary inability-period and returning to work. Med. segur. trab. [online]. 2014, vol.60, n.237, pp.675-684. ISSN 1989-7790.  https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/S0465-546X2014000400007.

Objective: This issue analyses the relationship between the influence of particular variables: the Temporary Inability due to Common Contingencies in an Insurance Company Funds register for Accidents at Work and Occupational Illness -linked to the Spanish Social Security- and the return to work: length of stay and admission process. Method: A descriptive, retrospective study of all discharge proceedings regarding common contingency in 65,540 businesses that covered the common contingency with the insurance company during 6 years. The effect of some factors related to the management of such contingency is analysed regarding the length and reason for admission to hospital. The values of each evidence (p) are indicated and the relevance of its relationship is estimated as well (d). Results: 86.9 of the people returned to their active work due to a condition improvement and recovery, taking an average of 32 days. 14.0% of the cases were discharged during the start of the management process in the first week of Insurance Company Fund register. The discharge process delay in the Insurance Company Funds register, which would allow to start the process management, shows a considerable effect (rxy= 0.120) according with its length. There is a significant statistic relationship: a relevant changing effect of the economic crisis and the reason of returning-to-the-active-work- process (V= 0.126), showing an important decrease at the end of the period of returning to work as a result of absenteeism. Discussion: The results describe the Temporary Inabilities for Common Contingencies (Spanish ITCC) as an own decision process of the worker dealing not only with the healthcare, but with other variables handling the period of absence and the return to work. The progress in the register systems and the quickness when communicating the ITCC cases would allow to improve the management efficiency in all the cooperative entities.
