Abstract

RAMOS MARTIN, Juan Manuel. Assessing «Field dependence» in the context of anxiety problems. Clínica y Salud [online]. 2006, vol.17, n.1, pp.31-49. ISSN 2174-0550.

Simplicity, easiness and psychometric properties make the GEFT an attractive tool to assess field dependence. This tool has been used within the context of anxiety problems, where a relationship is observed with anxiety as a state but not as a trait. We used the GEFT along with the ISRA in a sample of 79 patients to check whether or not field dependence was a factor of vulnerability for anxiety. We also used it in a sample of 53 patients to check its impact on therapeutic progress. Results show that field-dependent people have higher levels of anxiety (p=.018). Field-independent people benefited more from treatment, specially their cognitive response system (p=.047). It is suggested to split the construct into sub-processes in order to achieve a better identification of mechanisms undergoing field-independent advantage to cope with anxiety.

Keywords : Anxiety; Cognitive style; Three-Systems Model.
