Abstract

Introduction: At present pressure ulcers have become a major public health problem, this due among other factors to inexperience and ignorance of the subject of many professional caregivers, it is expected that these professionals to obtain their academic training in basic skills to care for themselves, nursing situation is much more important than the direct responsibility has been assigned in the occurrence of pressure ulcers. Objective: To determine the level of knowledge of nursing students at a university in the city of Medellin; on the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers, following the recommendations of the Grupo Nacional para el Estudio y Asesoramiento de Úlceras por Presión y Heridas Crónicas (GNEAUPP). Method: A descriptive study using survey autofilled: 50 multiple-choice questions. Study population (n) = 118 students of all semesters of professional nursing career at the university. Results and conclusions: The results of the study show that undergraduate nursing students have a good level in the area of treatment and care of pressure ulcers and a low level in the area of anatomy and physiology of the skin, and prevention of these injuries. Although the results denote be favorable across the board, there are important "particular issues" of each field (treatment and prevention) related professional and the failure rate.
