Abstract
BENITO SANCHEZ, M. and SANCHEZ SANCHEZ, J.A.. Radiological and image analysis study to estimate the age in sternum and scapula of adult population. Cuad. med. forense [online]. 2013, vol.19, n.3-4, pp.87-94. ISSN 1988-611X. https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/S1135-76062013000200004.
Nowadays, the studies to estimate the age in adult individuals do not give reliable information to forensic anthropology cases. For this reason, it is necessary to research in this area improving the current methods or designing new ones. The present study has been carried out using 226 scapulas and 98 sternums from current Spanish population individuals of known age and sex, which have been submitted to a standardized process of x-ray and digitalization. On the x-rays plaques, the medium grey values have been obtained, using Image J software, in a 1cm2 of surface, in the glenoid cavity and acromion of the scapula, and in the manubrium and body of the sternum. The results calculated using the statistical software SPSS 15.0 have shown the best variable to predict the age in adult individuals has been the medium grey value in the manubrium of the sternum. It has given, for itself, a 63% of information in females and a 56% in males. The combination with the other three variables has not improved the percentage of reliability because it has only increased until a 69% in females and 64% in males.
