Te present article describes the SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) electronic publication model, the methodology which has been developed and the quality criteria applied to the selection of scientific journals, as well as its origin, evolution and application in Europe Latin America and the Caribbean Countries. It also shows the main features of the access to the journal collection of SciELO España. The article concludes stating that the mentioned model contributes to develop scientific research, increasing the dissemination of scientific production, assessing its results and improving the quality of publications.
