Abstract

PLASENCIA, Eliseo; GARCIA-IZQUIERDO, Fuensanta  and  PUENTE-RODRIGUEZ, Martín. Emergence age and polymorphic sequencies of the permanent dentition in a sample from Asturias, Spain. RCOE [online]. 2005, vol.10, n.1, pp.31-42. ISSN 1138-123X.

A sample of 1.616 individuals, between 5 and 15 years of age, from the «Área II» of Asturias, has been employed in a cross-sectional study of dental emergence timing with two main objectives. The first one was to calculate the emergence age of each permanent tooth, excluding third molars. The second one was to find out the frequency of sequences confronting every tooth with each of the other teeth in order to detect possible polymorphic sequences. The main findings include that emergence occurs earlier in females and that the first tooth to erupt is the lower lateral incisor (I1i) and the last, the upper second molar (M2s) in both sexes. Three sequences showed a significant sexual dimorphism: P2sCi, CiP1i and CiP2i. Additionally, we compared our results with those of Fernández Rico (1983) on a population from Asturias and two recent similar studies on other populations from Spain.

Keywords : Emergence age; Eruption sequences.
