Objective: Study review that analyzed some research on adherence to treatment of malaria produced during 2000-2011. Methods: We obtained 27 articles in a search made in several databases, using a combination of several descriptors related to treatment adherence and malaria. Results: Most studies were conducted in Africa and Latin America and the type of malaria researched was Plasmodium falciparum. Therapeutic regimens commonly used in research were chloroquine and primaquine, and artemether-lumefantrine and sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine combinations with other drugs. The children were the most studied subject. Several methods were used for measuring compliance. There was variability in prevalence rates of adherence / non adherence. Few studies have sought to determine factors that contribute to adherence / nonadherence to antimalarial drugs. Conclusion: There are gaps that must be filled with research conducted to verify the prevalence of adherence to malaria treatment in Latin American countries.
