Abstract

Objective
To determine if the overweight and obesity on family members is related to the environmental and cultural factors in family functioning.
Method
A correlational descriptive study was done. The sample was 198 family members. There were applied a general information schedule, the Intrafamily Relation Evaluation Scale, the Food Choice Questionnaire and the Physical Activity Questionnaire.
Results
8.6% of older than 18 participants had overweight and 46.5% had some degree of obesity. Body mass index of the adults was associated with total amount of kilocalories related to physical activity (r=.594, p<.01), feeding ecology (rs=.160, p=.024) and nutritional value (rs=.242, p>01). Cultural factors were not associated with body mass index (r = .242, p>01).
Conclusions
In this sample overweight and obesity were related with environmental factors.
