GUTIERREZ VALVERDE, Juana Mercedes et al. Study of families: Environmental and Cultural Factors associated with Overweight and Obesity. Enferm. glob. [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.45, pp.1-19.  Epub Dec 14, 2020. ISSN 1695-6141.  https://dx.doi.org/10.6018/eglobal.16.1.253811.

Objective

To determine if the overweight and obesity on family members is related to the environmental and cultural factors in family functioning.

A correlational descriptive study was done. The sample was 198 family members. There were applied a general information schedule, the Intrafamily Relation Evaluation Scale, the Food Choice Questionnaire and the Physical Activity Questionnaire.

Results

8.6% of older than 18 participants had overweight and 46.5% had some degree of obesity. Body mass index of the adults was associated with total amount of kilocalories related to physical activity (r=.594, p<.01), feeding ecology (rs=.160, p=.024) and nutritional value (rs=.242, p>01). Cultural factors were not associated with body mass index (r = .242, p>01).

Conclusions

In this sample overweight and obesity were related with environmental factors.
