Favism is a clinical form of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, the most common enzymatic defect of the erythrocyte and responsible for two syndromes: an episodic haemolytic anaemia (induced by infections or ingestion of fava beans or some drugs with oxidative power), and a spontaneous chronic haemolytic anaemia. Most individuals with G6PDH deficiency remain asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic until contact with an oxidant substance, which is why taking a history is essential for correct diagnosis and treatment.

Knowledge of this pathology is very important because in recent years there has been increased migratory flow from the Mediterranean in Spain, which increases the probability of treating the population with this deficiency.
