Abstract

DELGADO-SANTILLANA, Teresa; DE LA FUENTE-BALLESTEROS, Sara; PANEDAS-REDONDO, Esther  and  BANUELOS-PENA, Pedro. Hypomagnesaemia following omeprazole. Rev Clin Med Fam [online]. 2023, vol.16, n.2, pp.124-127.  Epub Sep 18, 2023. ISSN 2386-8201.  https://dx.doi.org/10.55783/rcmf.160212.

Hypomagnesaemia associated with chronic treatment with Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) is a rare entity, although potentially severe. Its mechanism remains unknown. When the magnesaemia falls below 0.5 mEq/L, neuromuscular and cardiac clinical manifestations may appear. At the acute stage, early replacement of magnesium and, in most cases, calcium and potassium, is usually the treatment. However, its definitive normalization requires the withdrawal of PPI treatment.

Keywords : Magnesium Deficiency; Proton Pump Inhibitors; Tetany.
