Introduction: The informed consent process constitutes an important element in health. Failures in this process may make the patient feel coerced into accepting treatment. Objective: to evaluate the degree of expression of coercion of outpatients and inpatients in a university hospital. Method: cross action study with 285 patients of a university hospital. It was used the Scale of Coercion Expression in care to assess the degree of expression of coercion of participants. We used the Assessment Instrument Development Psychological and moral to also evaluate this data. The data had been analyzed using the Test Qui-square and Index of Correlation of Spearman. Results and conclusion: there was a low level of expression of coercion, predominantly degree zero. The data revealed that the study participants felt free to express their choices and have the capacity to make decisions autonomously.
