Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the isolation of patients and satisfaction of universal self-care requirements described in Orem´s Theory.

Firstly, Human Needs and some aspects of Human Development are studied. This work is based on the Orem´s Model because it is the only theoretical model based on the concept of self-care. About isolation of patients, first, the attributes which describe any isolation situation are described. Next, isolation is studied “as a tool to prevent the spread of infectious disease.

The methodology is based on deductive reasoning. The information from the bibliographic sources is used to analyse the self-care of the isolated person.

The final objective is to demonstrate if there is a self-care deficit. Nursing has an important role to play in acting to minimize the adverse effects of isolation.
