Abstract

The reality of the COVID-19 infection has been hitting us since the first quarter of 2020. During these months, health personnel have shown admirable courage and professionalism. How has the long-standing fight against the virus affected ICU staff?

OBJECTIVES:

To describe the frequency of burnout during the second - third wave of the COVID pandemic (second period) in the ICU staff of a second level hospital. Compare this frequency with that found during the first wave (first period).

METHODS:

cross-sectional observational study. A questionnaire that included the Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire and questions on factors related to the development of burnout was provided to ICU professionals.

CONCLUSION.

Burnout syndrome was frequent among professionals in our unit who worked in the second period. It was much more frequent than in the first period. Most of the professionals with burnout from the second period had worked in the first period.
