Introduction: When prospective students arrive to graduate level, they have expectations about mentoring that generate an expected image about mentor, and cause that students behave more accord to their beliefs structure, than with the real process of mentoring. Subjects and methods: With the aim of explore the mentors attributes as was seen by students, in two different times of formative trajectory, we use qualitative techniques: an open questionnaire applied to prospective students, and focus groups with students of a master degree in medical, dentistry and health sciences of National Autonomous University of Mexico. Results: The prospective students show differences by knowledge field. The master students mention more specific actions and results of mentoring processes. Conclusion: It is not correct to ignore the expectative goals of students because could be a serious divergence between student's expectations and the real mentoring operation. Expectations must be considered in planning, operating an evaluating mentoring.
