The aim of the article is describing the use of the focal group as a technique of data collection and content analysis as a means of organization and analysis of results used in a qualitative research, whose subjects were community health agents. It was noticed that the focal group is a methodological strategy viable of being applied by nursing, because it values experiences of each participant, allowing group interaction and living exchange. It was considered content analysis as a technique that is able to reveal sense and meanings of these speeches, with string methodology that is required to qualitative research. Doing this research besides contributing for knowledge advance in nursing area became pleasurable for researchers and participants, because the focal group is a space of dialog, many times, not available in daily work of community health agents.
