Abstract

Objective:
Investigate expectations about alcohol consumption among fifth grade elementary school students.
Methods:
Descriptive and transversal study, carried out in primary school students in Minatitlán, Veracruz (Mexico). The sample consisted in 384 students, selected by simple random sampling. It was used the scale of Expectations towards Alcohol Consumption for children CEA-N. Descriptive analysis was complemented with Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test and logistic regression.
Results:
The positive expectancy sociability showed significant differences for consumption ever in life (z=-3.679, p<.01), in the last year (z=-2.230, p<.05), in the last month (z=-2.901, <.01), in the last week (z=-2.101, p=.036). The negative expectancy negative states (z=-2.531, p<.05) showed differences in consumption ever in life.
Conclusions:
Children’s alcohol consumption was associated with positive expectancies of sociability, parental and friend consumption.
