Introduction
Poor sleep quality may be associated with a high percentage of body fat, due to alterations in the metabolism of hormones that regulate appetite and hunger. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between body fat percentage (%BF) and sleep quality in Peruvian university Nutrition students.
Material and Methods
The design responds to a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out on a sample of 155 university students from the School of Human Nutrition ages between 16 and 30 years. The %BF was estimated by bioimpedance and sleep quality through the Pittsburg questionnaire, a survey conducted on paper. Data analysis was done using Stata version 16 statistical software.
Results
65.2% of the sample was made up of females. 58.7% of students presented a poor quality of sleep, while 47.1% showed an inadequate %BF. The proportion of females that showed a %BF inadequate was higher compared to the males (57.4 vs 27.8 %BF; p<0.001), respectively. Finally, no association was found between %BF and quality of sleep (RP=1.14; IC95%: 0.81-1.60; p=0.466).
Conclusions
The findings of the present study show that undergraduate Nutrition students presented a high inadequate frequency of sleep quality and %BF. Nonetheless, there was no significant association between %BF and quality of sleep.
