RUIZ DE ALEGRIA FERNANDEZ DE RETANA, Begoña et al. Coping changes in dialysis patients over the time. Rev Soc Esp Enferm Nefrol [online]. 2009, vol.12, n.1, pp.11-17. ISSN 1139-1375.
Objective: To know the association between time on dialysis and the change in coping strategies and the quality of life and modulating factors: anxiety, perceived stress, perception of control, social support and comorbidity. Methods: We studied 61 stable patients under HHD and 32 under CAPD, aged <70 years old, with different times under dialysis treatment. We applied the questionnaires for Stai-R, perceived stress-PSS, perception of control, social support MOS, coping strategies, quality of life (SF36) and satisfaction with life. The statistical analyses were adjused for differences in age and sex. Results: The ratio of men to women was 60/33. The average age was 54. The CAPD group was younger with a higher proportion of women and shorter time under treatment, 2.6 vs 6.0 years. We used both groups in the final sample. We found a negative association between the mental component summary scale and time under dialysis, p=0.006, for each year on treatment the score decreased 0.6 points. The support Seeking and Distraction were negatively correlated with time under treatment, r=-0.19 and -0.21 respectively. The Social Isolation and Confrontation were positively associated with time under dialysis. Conclusions: As time under dialysis goes on, the patients use less Distraction and Support Seeking and they use more intensively Social Isolation and Confrontation. Such changes decrease psychological wellbeing and are associated with a worst perception of mental health.
