Introduction
This study aims to determine the relationship of diet quality in women with weight change, body mass index (BMI), and depression one year after undergoing sleeve gastrectomy.
Material and Methods
This is a cross-sectional descriptive study with 62 women aged 18-65 years who underwent sleeve gastrectomy in a private hospital and completed their first postoperative year. The participants were asked to fill a questionnaire on 3-day food consumption record, sociodemographic characteristics, and nutritional status; beck depression inventory (BDI) was applied. Mean adequacy ratio (MAR) was used to evaluate diet quality.
Results
The mean age was 33.6±9.5 years. The mean MAR score was 76.0±31.8, and the mean BDI score was 8.2±6.4. The excess weight loss rate was high in patients with good diet quality, and the BMI and depression scores were low (PEWL, BMI > 0.05, PBeck < 0.001). Diet quality was found to be negatively correlated with body weight, BMI and depression scores and positively correlated with excess weight loss.
Conclusions
Enhancing the diet quality can help patients in overcoming postoperative depression and increasing the success of weight loss. Regular follow-up and guidance provided to the patients by specialized dietitians can further augment the success rates.
