CANDELA, Ruth y VILLASANTE, Olga. “The Leganés Asylum: present, past, and future”. A reform project by José Salas y Vaca (1911-1929). Rev. Asoc. Esp. Neuropsiq. [online]. 2021, vol.41, n.140, pp.181-208. Epub 14-Mar-2022. ISSN 2340-2733. https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/s0211-57352021000200010.
Since its foundation in 1851, the Leganés asylum´s institutional history and clinical activity have been studied. In the first decades of the 20th century, José Salas y Vaca, as chief medical officer, as member of the so-called “Archivos de Neurobiología Generation”, a group of reformist psychiatrists who inspired the republican reforms, promoted a series of changes in the institution. The aim of this paper is to study, through primary sources and clinical records of Salas y Vaca, how these reformist ideas improved the institution. The article deals with the increase in the workforce, the beginning of the teaching of psychiatry in the institution and the introduction of therapeutic innovations during the first third of the 20th century.
