Objective: This study aims not only to discover the job satisfaction level of the nurses working in public hospitals of the city of Badajoz but to determine the differences among medical centers and to identify the variables which may affect such job satisfaction. Methods: a homemade questionnaire was made following a content reliability studies and validity perspective. It was delivered to the nurses working on the public hospitals related to the Extremadura Health Service (SES, Sistema Extremeño de Salud) of Badajoz in 2009. Results: the return rate amounts to 34.7%. The professional profile is mostly female (83'3%), with permanent employment status (78.9%) and professional experience of more than 10 years (77.5%). Conclusions: the results obtained by the survey helped us to identify those dimensions of the workplace perception that nurses are more satisfied with. The highest score (67.2%) is related to the competence development. In general, the job satisfaction degree according to the nurse group is medium high, which is in fact consistent with other works of similar characteristics.
