Introduction. The postoperative pain (PP) continúes insufficiently being treated. Study PATHOS has been designed with the objective to identify the present state of the postoperative pain in certain áreas, as well as the necessities and possibilities of improvement the treatment being centered in the hospital wards. Material and method. Prospective, observational and multicentric study. The referring data to the practice of the handling of the postoperative pain, took shelter anonymously by means of a standardized questionnaire of múltiple answer in Europe. This work we are going to be centered in the results obtained in Spain. Results. It emphasizes the participation of surgeons. Spain is deficient in the presurgical information on the treatment of the PP. Most of the Spanish hospitals have not any organized structure for the treatment of postoperative pain. The staff who more often informs to the patients on the PP is not the anesthesiologist. Spain also is deficient in the existence of specific written protocols for the treatment of PP. In most of the hospitals the PP it is not evaluated. Most of the patients did not make an evaluation of satisfaction of the treatment of the PP. Conclusions. Numerous papers take to the conclusión that the treatment of the PP is unsatisfactory, fundamentally because the lack of an efficient organization who allows to apply the resources available correctly. These deficiencies have been shown in the PATHOS study. The obtained results must serve to analyze the deficiencies and potentials improvements that can be carried out in the treatment of this type of pain in Spain.
