Introduction: Stress is related to physical and mental illness and is recognized as one of the main problems in the proper functioning of health workers and their institutions. Objective: Based on the Stress Transaction Model, the objective of this study was to characterize the stress of nurses who work in specialized cardiology hospitals. Method: quantitative, descriptive and comparative methods. The population consisted of 77 nurses. The instruments used were: Bianchi Stress Questionnaire, Work Stress Inventory and Perceived Stress Scale. Results: Nurses have medium stress levels (3,49) and the highest causes of stress were related to staff administration, work conditions and unit coordination. Nurses who have university Degrees demonstrated higher levels of stress (p=0,027) and working in open units was related to high professional development (p=0,024). Conclusion: sociodemographic characteristics and work organization interacted with stress perception and professional valorization. The strategies to reduce stress have to be included in interpersonal relationships and invest in valorization of nurses in order to give excellent quality care to the patients.
