Resumen

ESTEFANIA BUEDO, Paola  y  RODRIGO BUFFONE, Ignacio. Diagnostic criteria for celiac disease: an updated review. Rev Clin Med Fam [online]. 2014, vol.7, n.3, pp.212-219. ISSN 2386-8201.  https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/S1699-695X2014000300005.

Objective: To review the literature in order to establish current criteria for the diagnosis of the celiac disease (CD), highlighting the importance of duodenal biopsy for that aim. Search approach: Bibliography from scientific journals and articles published in the period from 2000 and 2014, obtained using PubMed and LILACS, and using MeSH terms: Celiac disease/diagnosis and DeCS: Celiac Disease/DI, respectively. Study and data selection: A total number of 42 articles were selected, choosing those specially focused on the diagnosis of the Celiac Disease (CD) in the general population, which were free and available, published between 2000 and 2014 and which were primary studies or written by specialists on the area. Results: The appropriate use of specific serologic tests together with a genetic study could serve to identify most patients with CD. In this way the need to perform invasive studies such as duodenal biopsy could be avoided. Conclusions: Due to the high sensitivity and specificity reported by the specific antibodies and the genetic study, most patients with celiac disease could be accurately identified using the mentioned tests appropriately, thus avoiding the need to perform a biopsy. In this way the biopsy would be restricted to specific situations.
