Objective. Due the fact of to produce and to secret several bioactive substances, was given to adipose tissue the role of endocrine organ. The aim of this study was to realize a review about this role of the adipose tissue through the production of cytokines/adipocytokines, about the ghrelin and its role of metabolic hormone, in addition to the response of these substances to acute and chronic physical exercise with distinct characteristics. Method. Were selected articles published at journals indexed in the basis PubMed, SciELO and Scholar Google correlating the key words: adipose tissue, cytokines, adipocytokines, leptin, adiponectin, ghrelin, tumoral necrosis factor - α (TNF-α), physical exercise, aerobic exercise, strength exercise and hormones. Results. The studies suggest positive effects of physical exercise with distinct characteristics on the analyzed variables. Conclusion. The obtained data show the importance of an active life style.
