Resumen

TORRES ALAMINOS, María Angustias. Epidemiological aspects of spinal cord injury in the Paraplejics National Hospital. Ene. [online]. 2018, vol.12, n.2, 122. ISSN 1988-348X.

Introduction:

It can be considered that all people at any time in the life cycle can be at risk population. The daily use of the car, certain work activities, some types of sports, etc., are situations that to a certain extent carry the risk of being able to unexpectedly suffer a spinal cord injury.

Objective

To determine the incidence tendency of spinal cord injury in the National Hospital of Paraplegics during 2015 according to the origin and to describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of this population,

Material and Methods

We performed a retrospective descriptive study of patients who had suffered a spinal cord injury in 2015 of traumatic, non-traumatic origin, caused by diseases, falls, accidents at work, etc.

Results:

The number of new cases was 275 patients. Spinal cord injury of non-traumatic origin has been the main cause of spinal cord injury (58%) followed by traumatic spinal cord injuries (42%), especially in the older population. (51%) of the spinal cord injured had a dorsal vertebral fracture, followed by cervical (36%) and lumbo-sacral (13%) lesions.

Conclusion:

In recent years there has been a decrease in the incidence of spinal cord injury of traumatic origin with a change in the target population, mainly affecting the older population. These findings show the need to rethink campaigns for the prevention of spinal cord injury in the general population.
