Thinking is an inherent capacity for the human being, and has been studied from ancient time by the great Greek thinkers to this day. In the field of nursing the critical thinking is essential to reach a quality practice. This article emerge in the order to announce the importance of critical thinking to the Nursing, specifically in the training of these professionals. With this objective it is realized a historical evolution of the concept of the critical thinking, including a definition from its broad conception, to its conceptualization and importance in nursing. Knowing the importance of the critical thinking in training of the future nurses will be able to develop learning strategies to encourage this thinking in students; therefore, training self-sufficient nurses, empowered by their role and able to perform a thoughtful practice, this is reflected into patient quality.
