Resumen

QUEZADA-RAMIREZ, Yarisbeth  y  SALAZAR-GONZALEZ, Bertha Cecilia. Adaptation of older adults facing mild cognitive impairment: middle range theory. Index Enferm [online]. 2023, vol.32, n.3, e14354.  Epub 04-Mar-2024. ISSN 1699-5988.  https://dx.doi.org/10.58807/indexenferm20236168.

Objective:

To describe a middle-range theory proposal based on Roy’s Adaptation Model (RAM) that incorporates memory compensation strategies for the adaptation of older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

Methods:

Formalization of conceptual-theoretical-empirical structure was used to analyze the congruence between the concepts of the parental model (RAM) and the proposed theory.

Results:

The key concepts used are: (a) compensatory adaptation level (represented by MCI), (b) contextual stimuli (age, sex, schooling, awareness of memory problems, depression and anxiety), (c) focal stimulus (the intervention), (d) cognator subsystem, represented by the use of memory compensators; and (e) general adaptation (instrumental activities of daily living).

Conclusion:

The theoretical proposal shows congruence with the RAM and capability to guide the concepts of a nursing intervention that pretends to promote adaptation in older adults facing cognitive decline.
