FERBEYRE BINELFA, L. et al. Laringectomía casi-total: Experiencia en Cuba. Oncología (Barc.) [online]. 2004, vol.27, n.1, pp.49-56. ISSN 0378-4835.
INTRODUCTION: Near total laryngectomy is not a wide spread technique in our country. Due to the popularity gained by organ preservation treatment protocols in advanced laryngeal cancer it is very hard to select a case to perform this kind of surgery. PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to analyze the first 11 near total laryngectomies in our country and to report our experience concerning functional results and complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of the charts of 11 consecutive patients admitted and operated in different hospitals in our country between October 1999 and August 2002 focusing in functional results and complications. RESULTS: 8 out of 11 patients achieved satisfactory functional recover with an acceptable voice and postoperative aspiration was present in only two patients who recovered normal swallowing spontaneously within a few days. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that Near Total Laryngectomy can be a standard option in selected cases for surgical management of advanced laryngeal and pharyngo-laryngeal cancers in our country.
