Objective: to describe the first meeting of the father with the son in the UCIN and analyze the meanings of the first meeting of the father with the preterm baby. Method: qualitative study, developed at a public maternity in Rio de Janeiro, with eight parents of preterm infants, through semi-structured interview. Data analyzed through thematic analysis. Results: three thematic nucleus have been identified: "first meeting with premature son: paternal feelings and emotions", "building a relationship with the hospital team since the first visit" and "recognizing fatherhood in the context of the UCIN". Conclusion: the first meeting of the father with his son in the UCIN triggers feelings and brings surprise, pain, uncertainty, joy and hope. The health team should be prepared to provide emotional support, deliver information and establish effective communication from the first visit.
