Objective: To characterize the Brazilian research groups that have research lines related to health history and are registered in the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) among the areas of health and human sciences. Methods: A quantitative/qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and documentary research. Data were collected from December 2010 to March 2011 using the directory of CNPq research groups. Results: 1387 members constitute the groups, 83 % of researchers have doctors or masters degree. Within the research, 1/ 3 have direct association with health history. Conclusions: There is a progressive development of new groups and high qualification of researchers, we highlights the linkage/collaboration between research groups and post-graduate programs, as well of the recognition of the relevance of historical studies in the construction and development of professions.
