MARTINEZ-SEBASTIAN, Alicia; ROSELLO-GUIJARRO, Mireia  e  PEREZ-PARETS, Carla A. The importance of ultrasound in the differential diagnosis of neonatal giant mastauxe: a case report. Rev Pediatr Aten Primaria [online]. 2021, vol.23, n.92, pp.409-412.  Epub 13-Mar-2023. ISSN 1139-7632.

Abstract

Neonatal breast intumescence is a benign physiological condition, which can be classified as giant when it reaches a diameter greater than 3 cm. This can be associated with certain complications such as mastitis or breast abscess, so knowing it and knowing how to make a correct differential diagnosis between these entities is essential, with ultrasound imaging playing a fundamental role. Clinical case: 14-day-old male neonate who attended the emergency department due to a large, highly indurated bilateral breast hypertrophy that appeared in the last 24 hours, without fever or changes in skin coloration, with ultrasound appearance of breast intumescence, without associated complications, which presented good subsequent clinical evolution, with clinical resolution at 6 months of follow-up. The pediatrician should know this physiological clinical entity that may not be associated with mastitis or inflammatory or infectious changes and that may be difficult to differentiate at first from the previous ones, in order to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations and antibiotic therapy.
