Objective:

To Analyze the use of the diary in intensive care units and their therapeutic effects.

Methods:

Qualitative review of the literature published between 2006 and 2019 in the main biomedical databases.

Results:

Selected 48 articles. Diaries have been used in European countries since the 1970s. There is methodological controversy in the writing and preparation of the diary Its therapeutic effects are positive for: relatives (favor communication and expression feelings), patients (help to understand what happened) and professionals (produce personal/professional satisfaction).

Conclusions:

The use of diaries is a common practice nurse in Europe, no evidence in Spain. Diaries improve anxiety and depression for patients and relatives, improve posttraumatic stress in families. It is a useful tool that promotes nursing development.
