BUSTILLO ARRIETA, J.. Involvement of third molar eruption in severe anterior crowding. Av Odontoestomatol [online]. 2016, vol.32, n.2, pp.107-116. ISSN 2340-3152.

Objective: Estimate the degree of association between anterior crowding and the presence of third molars in study casts and panoramic radiographs in patients at the Facultyof Dentistry of the university of Cartagena de Indias and centers of dental care and radiological of Cartagena de Indias (Colombia). Design: Cross sectional study. Location: Faculty of Dentistry of the university of Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) and others dental care centers in town. Participants: 366 study casts and panoramic radiographs of patients selected by strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. Main Surveyed Data: An instrument which included age, sex, presence or absence of third molars, third molars position by classification of Winter, stage formation of the third molars by classification of Nolla and the magnitude of crowding byclassification of Harfin. Data were analyzed based on frequency distributions and proportions; inferential analysis was performed using the chi2 test with the SPSS statistic v22 IBM program. In addition, multivariate analysis was performed using simple correlation analysis in the R statistical program. Results: The prevalence of anterior crowding was 70.2%. Statistically significant association between the magnitude of anterior crowding with the stage formation of the lower left third molar was presented. Conclusions: Prevalence of anterior crowding in the subjects was high; stage formation of the third molar is a determining factor in the appearance of anterior crowding.
