RODRIGUEZ-GARCIA, Freddy; MIRANDA-VILLERA, Cristo; PEYNADO-VILA, Álvaro  e  PRADO-CANTILLO, Diana. Surgical anatomy of gluteus maximus muscle: FROD'S Intramuscular Space. Cir. plást. iberolatinoam. [online]. 2016, vol.42, n.2, pp.149-156. ISSN 1989-2055.

Background and Objectives. The gluteal maximus muscle is the most voluminous and superficial of the gluteal region, shaped quadrilateral, with two different insertions, variable thickness in its different areas and covered with different fascias or aponeurosis. A detailed study of descriptive and surgical anatomy of this muscle was conducted to compare which of the current techniques used for buttock augmentation with implants is safer, and which provides better results. Methods. Ten fresh cadavers provided by the Institute of Legal Medicine Regional Norte, and 10 formolized from the amphitheater of the Universidad Libre Sectional Barranquilla (Colombia), were studied between March 2009 and February 2010. Results. It was determined that the gluteus maximus muscle, in addition to its anatomical features detailed in the descriptive anatomy texts, consists of thick parallel and adjacent muscle bundles held together by strong partitions or fibroaponeurotic septa, from the surface to the depth. In our study, an intramuscular anatomic space in the gluteus maximus, not described previously in publications of Plastic Surgery or in the most famous texts of Anatomy, was found. It appears as a clean area, around 10 cm in diameter, with delicate aponeurosis muscle in the base, without the presence of the usual fibroaponeurotic interfascicular septa, and without significant vascular nor nerve structures. Conclusions. We describe a new intramuscular space in the gluteus maximus muscle, that we identify as Intramuscular FROD´s Space, and that may be considered to have a great potential for implementation of gluteal augmentation techniques.
