ALVES DA SILVA, Carina; PINA, Daniela; HERNANDEZ, Hanna  e  ROMAN, Manel. Systematic Review of Toxicity Derived from Graphene Exposure. Med. segur. trab. [online]. 2018, vol.64, n.250, pp.75-88. ISSN 1989-7790.

Graphene is an atomic-scale hexagonal lattice made up of carbon atoms. This material exhibits excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, being resistant, flexible, very light and stable at high pressures. It has become due to these properties one of the most prosperous materials, whose applications generate a great investment of time and economic resources. Both industrial professionals and other third parties may be exposed to their possible harmful effects.

This work aims to investigate the existence of graphene toxicity in humans and other mammals, reviewing the scientific literature concerning the exposure to graphene in the last 10 years and the possible adverse effects on human health. To identify as well the dose-response assessment of toxicity (if any), the exposure measurement and monitoring devices, and which organs or apparatus exhibit bigger exposure and damage. To check finally for toxicity differences among the different forms of graphene studied.

To address these objectives, the literature search has been limited to those articles published between 2007 and 2017 in the following databases; MEDLINE, SCIENCEDIRECT, COCHRANE and SCOPUS. A total of 17 articles were selected using inclusion-exclusion criteria.

Based on these references, a potential health effect to the exposure to different forms of graphene in a dose-dependent manner is suggested, principally but not exclusively in respiratory exposure. Therefore, more precise studies must be carried out to reach a consensus in relation to the maximum permissible exposure limits and the requirements in terms of individual protection measures.

Palavras-chave : Graphene; toxicity; exposure; occupational health.
