Background: "Roting", "correturnos" and many other names are used in Spain to refer to nurses who are not specifically assigned to a home unit. Objective: To describe "roting" nurses' perceptions of their competence and to identify factors influencing these perceptions. Methods: The study was conducted with 57 roting nurses working in public hospitals of Huelva. Socio-labour questionnaires and an adaptation of the Nurse Competence Scale were used. Results: Nurses reported their overall level of competence as good (mean: 61.69 on a scale from 0 to 100). Self-assessed overall scores also indicated a good level of competence across categories (mean: 54.50-66.53 on a scale from 0 to 100). The higher the self-assessed level of competence, the higher was the frequency of using competencies. Conclusions: Participants showed a considerable competence, taking into account the characteristics of their work. It would be necessary to gain in-depth understanding of the "roting" system from nurses' perspective.
