BANOS, J. E. e RUIZ-BARRIA, G.. Evaluation of experimental pain in the laboratory: models of neuropathic pain in animal's. Rev. Soc. Esp. Dolor [online]. 2006, vol.13, n.8, pp.542-552. ISSN 1134-8046.
In spite of the advancement of pain research in the last decade, the therapy of neuropathic pain is still an unresolved issue. Available treatments only adequately improve only a third of patients. Experimental models may contribute to the knowledge of its pathophysiology, as well as to the development of new drugs. Basically, two types of animal models are available: those that cause a lesion in the peripheral nerves and those that injury the central nervous system. Beyond these limitations, animal models may help to improve the knowledge of neuropathic pain and some of them have predictive value on the usefulness of analgesic efficacy of new drugs. Obviously, only well-designed, controlled clinical trials will permit to establish their actual efficacy in the clinical setting.
