Background:

The quality of prescription drugs in elderly polymedicated people is an aspect of great importance in the quality of primary care because this population has a high risk of inappropriate prescriptions and lack of adherence, resulting in important health impacts.

Objective:

To analyze the suitability of the pharmaceutical prescription and adherence treatment in the population over 75 years polymedicated in a basic health area of primary care.

Desing:

observational, descriptive and transversal study. 273 patients aged 75 years or older were included. The information was obtained through medical record review and revision of treatment through the STOPP/START criteria.

Results:

The percentage of inappropriate prescribing was 80.6%, predominantly STOPP criteria (67.4%) compared to the criteria START (53.3%). The percentage of adherence was 93.8%.

Conclusions:

There is a very high percentage of inappropriate prescribing, and the degree of compliance (93.8%) in patients over 75 years polymedicated, although no relationship between the two variables has.
