TALENS BELEN, Fernando  e  MARTINEZ DUCE, Nuria. Pressure ulcers, one more step in the care and safety of our patients. Gerokomos [online]. 2018, vol.29, n.4, pp.192-196. ISSN 1134-928X.

Introduction:

Pressure ulcers continue to be a socio-sanitary problem that has not decreased in recent years despite the existing preventive knowledge. It is necessary to make health professionals aware that pressure ulcers are, to a large extent, an adverse effect of the health system and, therefore, their presence is not tolerable.

Objectives:

To establish the total and nosocomial prevalence of the hospital and to build a map of the state of pressure ulcers in the center with descriptive epidemiological indicators.

Methodology:

observational descriptive study. On the one hand, different epidemiological indicators were constructed in the period comprised between 2014-2017. Simultaneously from the Unit of Chronic Wounds, different training and awareness workshops have been carried out in pressure ulcer prevention directed to the nursing professionals of the center.

Results:

In a sample of 11,959 patients, the following stand out among the different descriptive indicators: The Synthetic Indicator of Prevention superior to 98% in all the years of the study. The total prevalence is around 5% and the nosocomial prevalence does not reach 3%.

Conclusions:

Reasonably positive results support a clinical nursing practice that is based on the implementation of the main preventive recommendations for pressure ulcers based on scientific evidence. Although, there is still room for improvement in the fight against pressure ulcers.
