This study analyses and contrasts the perceptions of tutors and their respective residents in the Family and Community Medicine speciality regarding the professional competencies acquired by the end of their postgraduate training. The study combined quantitative and qualitative data. Firstly, a questionnaire was used to collect a first opinion from two populations: residents (R3) in this speciality in Catalan hospitals (N=240) and their tutors (N=240). Discussion groups were then organised in order to analyse and clarify the data obtained through the questionnaire. This process was developed in parallel with both groups. Results showed that, statistically, tutors’ perceptions of the degree of expertise obtained by the end of the residency period are either very similar to or higher than those of the residents themselves and, in general, quite positive. The most valued areas are basic clinical skills, handling skills, communication and prevention; the least valued ones are teaching, research and community, with the other areas (instrumental techniques, organisational aspects and family) in an intermediate position. However, the narrative data reflected a more complex situation, suggesting that specialist training still focuses more on attention to the individual than on areas linked to an integrated approach to health.
