MENDOZA-RODRIGUEZ, R.. Acute toxicity of copper sulfate on postlarvae of freshwater prawn cryphiops caementarius. Arch. zootec. [online]. 2009, vol.58, n.221, pp.103-110. ISSN 1885-4494.

This paper evaluated toxicity of copper sulfate (CuSO4.5H2O) on postlarvae freshwater prawn Cryphiops caementarius through acute toxicity tests, to determine lethal concentrations (LC1, LC50) and effective concentration (EC50). Concentrations equivalent to 0.6, 1.0, 1.9, 3.1, 4.0, 7.8 and 12.5 mg/l, and the control free of toxic substance were utilized in freshwater. A total of 240 postlarvae were utilized, three replicates of 10 postlarvae each. The results of acute toxicity test reflected that this stage is very sensitive to copper sulfate finding values of LC1, LC50 and EC50 for 24 h: 1.41, 3.875 and 3.97 mg/l, for 48 h: 0.828, 3.399 and 3.37 mg/l, for 72 h: 0.212, 2.55 and 2.96 mg/l and for 96 h: 0.174, 2.054 and 2.28 mg/l CuSO4.5H2O. The survival and swimming activity were affected for copper sulfate; diminish with the increase of the concentrations. Concentrations of 7.8 and 12.5 mg/l were dangerously pollutant (90 and 100% mortality for 24 h respectively), concentrations of 0.6 and 1.0 mg/l were tolerable (100% survival for 48 h).

Palavras-chave : Survival; Swimming activity.
