AMEZCUA, Manuel. Marta Carrillo and the feminine conscience of inequality. Temperamentvm [online]. 2022, vol.18, e18v3. Epub 17-Abr-2023. ISSN 1699-6011. https://dx.doi.org/10.58807/tmptvm20224802.
Marta Carrillo, better known as Marta de Jesús, was a noblewoman from Priego who, after being widowed, dedicated the rest of her life to the creation of hospitals and other activities aimed at the socially less favored sectors (poor, women and children). In the 17th century, for almost half a century, she walked with the tertiary habit to various places in Andalusia as her benefactor until she died in the Hospital del Pozo Santo, erected by her in Seville to care for disabled women. This is yet another case of relevant women silenced by history. Following in the footsteps of hospitality, Marta de Jesús used the legal framework of the Church to make various initiatives possible that contributed to supplying the institutional shortcomings of a society that made helping the poor depend on the good will of private benefactors.
