RODRIGUEZ MILLAN, Julia; GARNICA DE COS, Eva e MALO OCEJO, Pablo. Psychiatric symptoms as initial presentation in limbic encephalitis: case report. Rev. Asoc. Esp. Neuropsiq. [online]. 2014, vol.34, n.122, pp.375-382. ISSN 2340-2733. https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/S0211-57352014000200009.
Introduction: Limbic encephalitis is an autoimmune and often paraneoplastic disorder, characterized by neuropsychiatric symptoms and frequently associated with several tumors such as small cell lung cancer, thymoma, testicular teratoma or breast cancer. Several autoantibodies have been identified linked to limbic encephalitis, i.e. the anti-NMDAR, frequently associated with ovarian teratoma and psychiatric symptoms in young patients. Case report: A 14-year-old girl with auditory hallucinations, speech problems, agitation, abnormal movements and poor response to anti-psychotics was diagnosed of anti-NMDAR encephalitis, and there after an ovarian teratoma was detected and treated. Discussion: Anti-NMDAR encephalitis is often first treated by psychiatrists because of its presentation with personality changes, hallucinations, agitation etc. Psychiatrists should consider this autoimmune disorder in order to give patients correct and early diagnosis and treatment.
