SCIPION CASTRO, RD et al. Histological comparison of root surfaces conditioned with citric acid and EDTA after scaling. Av Odontoestomatol [online]. 2022, vol.38, n.1, pp.40-44. Epub 28-Mar-2022. ISSN 2340-3152. https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/s0213-12852022000100007.
Objective:
The objective of the present investigation was to determine the histology of the root surfaces conditioned with citric acid and EDTA prior scraping.
Material and methods:
The type of research is experimental since the action of the variable is controlled, that is, the application of citric acid and EDTA (ethylenediamine acid). For this, 40 healthy premolars were used, extracted for orthodontic indications. The teeth were randomly distributed in 4 groups, each of the groups consisted of 10 premolars. Group 1 consisted of vestibular root surfaces conditioned with citric acid after scaling, group 2 were conditioned with EDTA after scaling, group 3 consisted of premolars that only received scaling, and group 4 did not include scaling.
Results:
The macroscopic evaluation in relation to the cement plates, the scaling plus EDTA 10%, there is a normal presence, 30% a partial loss and 60% a severe loss, which is statistically significant. And the dentin tubules In the group without 100% scaling there is a normal presence of dentin tubules, which is not statistically significant. In the citric acid group, 30% have a partial loss and 70% a severe loss and the EDTA group 100% present a severe loss, both groups were shown to have a statistical significance.
Conclusions:
Root surfaces exposed to EDTA conditioning prior to scaling, in comparison with root surfaces conditioned with citric acid prior to scaling, show significant differences, which show that EDTA induces the greatest loss of structure of cement plates on the root surface and is evident Cement precipitation due to demineralization, conditioning undercuts with or without cement precipitation with greater exposure of dentinal tubules.
