SERRANO-GRANGER, Jorge e HERRERA, David. Dental plaque as a biofilm: How to eliminate it?. RCOE [online]. 2005, vol.10, n.4, pp.431-439. ISSN 1138-123X.
Biofilm is the natural form of bacterial growth in the oral cavity. It causes caries and periodontal diseases, and develops a higher resistance to antimicrobial agents. Therefore, studies should be addressed to show mouthrinse efficiency in penetrating into biofilm and producing enough bactericide action, or in avoiding biofilm development. At present, in this field we can only find studies that show the efficiency of chlorhexidine mouthrinses and of those with essential oils. Biofilm must be previously disrupted by physical means (such as brushing, flossing, prophylaxis and scaling and root planing, etc.) in order to achieve the best results with the use of antimicrobial agents.
