DOMINGO, E.; ABAD, A.; LANARI, M.R. y RAIMAN, R.. Body composition of neuquen-criollo goat in different body condition score. Arch. zootec. [online]. 2009, vol.58, n.221, pp.125-127. ISSN 1885-4494.
The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between different body condition score methods and body composition in 20 adult Neuquen-Criollo goats. Previous to slaughter experimental animal were weighted and lumbar, sternal and tail body condition score estimated by palpation. After slaughter animals were skinned. The omental and mesenteric fat were separated from the rest. Pericardic fat was removed and weighed. After chilling the carcasses for 24 h, cold carcass weight were recorded and KKCF (kidney knob and channel fat) removed and weighed. Carcasses were split down by the midline and the left side weighed and used for dissection. The left side of the carcass was separated into muscle, bone plus remainder and subcutaneous and intermuscular fat. The intermuscular and mesenteric fats develop earlier than the KKCF, subcutaneous and omental fats. KKCF was the best predictor of total body fat. Body fat as % of body weight was best correlated with lumbar body condition score.
