Mental health promotion and mental disorder prevention are effective and can bring about health, social and economic development to societies. This paper presents the evidence of these interventions including some examples of effective interventions and the programme elements that have shown to predict intervention outcomes. Strategies for the improvement of programme efficacy and efficiency are presented, emphasizing the role of researchers, practitioners and policy makers.
