Given the pattern of consumption and social use of psychoactive substances, the model of attention to mental health problems in penitentiary centers is reviewed. Female prisoners in these centers represent the 7.6% of prison population, the highest in Western Europe. Measures of penitentiary policies aimed at women prisoners prior to entry into prison and interventions in the penitentiary environment itself are outlined. In addition, community transition measures are presented.
