Abstract

AREVALO VELASCO, J.M.  and  CABELLO GRANADO, P.A.. The cost of the treatment of an spinal cord injured patient with pressure ulcer in the Spanish national health system. Cir. plást. iberolatinoam. [online]. 2013, vol.39, n.1, pp.67-71. ISSN 1989-2055.  https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/S0376-78922013000100009.

Currently there is no economic studies in Spain reflecting the cost of the therapy in a pressure ulcer (PU). We know the economic data from other countries like USA or the United Kingdom, but we believe that these contributions are not comparable to our country. So our goal is to analyze this aspect from the National Hospital of Paraplegics (HNP) as it is a monographic hospital in the treatment of pressure ulcers in spinal cord injured patients that can bring some light in this field. We concluded that total spending in Spain because of the PU’s stands at around 600 million euros. Much lower than in other countries perhaps because not only of higher costs or more pathology involving the PU’s in spinal cord injury but also because they include other populations of patients or the universality of any wound. In the current economic circumstances, it’s key to consider prevention as a central pillar to avoid this excessive spending which is usually due to an irregular practice care.
